Audi A3: The Digital Key NFC Sharing Authorization Setup

If you want to use your smartphone as a digital key for your Audi A3, first confirm that your vehicle supports the feature. Not every A3 has the hardware and software needed for Digital Key, even if it includes Audi connect and other smartphone features.

Digital Key is available on select 2026 and newer Audi vehicles with compatible equipment. To use it, you'll need the myAudi app, a verified Key User account, an active Audi connect Care subscription, a compatible smartphone and a supported digital wallet.

Before setting up NFC or sharing a digital key with another driver, check the equipment and features available on your specific A3.

What Is Audi Digital Key?

Audi Digital Key lets you use a compatible smartphone as your vehicle key. Depending on the phone and vehicle, the system can use Near Field Communication (NFC) or other supported wireless technology to communicate with the car.

With NFC, you may need to hold your phone against a designated reader to unlock the vehicle. Some systems also require you to place the phone in a specific charging area before starting the engine.

Digital Key works differently from Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay or regular smartphone pairing. Your phone can connect to the infotainment system without having permission to unlock or start the vehicle.

What Do You Need to Set Up an Audi A3 Digital Key?

Before you start, make sure your A3 supports Digital Key and that you have the required account access and equipment.

The basic requirements include:

  • A compatible 2026 or newer Audi A3 with Digital Key hardware and software
  • The myAudi mobile app
  • An active Audi connect Care subscription
  • Acceptance of the Audi connect Terms of Service
  • A compatible Apple or Android smartphone
  • A supported digital-wallet application
  • A verified Key User account

The Key User is the account holder authorized to manage certain vehicle functions through myAudi. This person can also add Secondary Users and manage access to supported connected features.

Having myAudi or Audi connect doesn't automatically mean your A3 supports Digital Key. Confirm the feature before beginning the setup process.

How to Set Up the Audi A3 Digital Key

If your A3 supports Digital Key, you can begin the setup process through the myAudi app. The exact steps may vary depending on your model year, smartphone and software version.

1. Confirm Your Key User Status

Open the myAudi app and make sure your A3 appears under your account. You must complete Key User verification before accessing certain vehicle functions.

The verification process links your account to the vehicle and may require the vehicle code provided with the car.

If you haven't completed Key User verification, the Digital Key setup option may not be available.

2. Open the Vehicle Functions

In the myAudi app, select Vehicle, then choose All functions.

This section displays the connected features available for your vehicle and account. If your A3, smartphone and software support Digital Key, the option should appear among the available functions.

3. Select Digital Key

Choose Digital Key and follow the instructions on your smartphone.

The setup process connects the vehicle's digital key to a compatible digital wallet. Once you complete authorization, the wallet stores the key so you can use your phone for the supported vehicle functions.

Depending on the system, these functions may include unlocking, locking and starting the vehicle.

4. Complete Phone Authorization

During setup, you may need to complete an authentication or pairing step to authorize your smartphone.

Some compatible Digital Key systems use an eight-digit pairing code delivered through myAudi. Enter the code when prompted and complete any additional verification steps.

Follow the instructions displayed in the app, as the authorization process can differ between vehicles, phones and software versions.

5. Test the NFC Function

Once you've added the Digital Key to your wallet, test the supported functions.

If your phone uses NFC, you may need to hold it near the vehicle's designated NFC reader to unlock the doors. Starting the vehicle may require placing the phone in the designated charging area.

The exact reader locations and operating instructions depend on your A3 equipment. Follow the setup instructions for your particular vehicle.

Can You Share an Audi A3 Digital Key?

Digital Key sharing allows an authorized user to give another person access to a compatible vehicle through their smartphone.

On supported systems, the primary user can share a digital key through the phone's digital wallet. Depending on the vehicle and software, the available permissions may include unlocking the vehicle, valet access or full vehicle access.

However, Digital Key sharing isn't available on every Audi A3. The vehicle must support the necessary hardware, software and sharing functions.

If you can't find a sharing option in your myAudi app or digital wallet, it doesn't automatically mean you made a setup mistake. Your A3 may not support that particular feature.

Before troubleshooting NFC authorization, confirm that Digital Key sharing is available for your exact model year and equipment.

Digital Key Sharing vs. Adding a Secondary User

Digital Key sharing and Secondary User management serve different purposes. Although both let another person access certain vehicle functions, they aren't interchangeable.

Digital Key Sharing

When supported, Digital Key sharing allows another person to use a compatible smartphone as a vehicle key.

The shared key resides in the recipient's digital wallet and provides the vehicle access permitted by the system.

Secondary User Access

A Secondary User has access to certain connected vehicle functions through their own myAudi account.

The verified Key User can add up to five Secondary Users through the app.

To add someone:

  1. Open the myAudi app.
  2. Select Vehicle.
  3. Choose All functions.
  4. Open User management.
  5. Enter the email address associated with the other person's myAudi account.
  6. Follow the instructions to add the user.

Adding a Secondary User doesn't automatically give that person a Digital Key.

If you want another driver to access supported myAudi functions, Secondary User management may be the appropriate option. To unlock and start the A3 with a smartphone, you'll need Digital Key sharing on a vehicle that supports it.

Why Isn't the NFC Digital Key Option Appearing?

If you can't find Digital Key in the myAudi app, check the vehicle and account requirements before assuming the NFC system is wrong.

Check the Model Year

Digital Key availability applies to select 2026 and newer Audi models. An older A3 may not have the required equipment.

Even among newer vehicles, availability depends on the specific model and configuration.

Confirm the Vehicle Equipment

An A3 can have Audi connect, Bluetooth and wireless smartphone integration without Digital Key.

Check whether your vehicle has the necessary Digital Key hardware and software. If the feature wasn't included, changing phone settings won't make it available.

Verify Your myAudi Account

Make sure the vehicle appears under your myAudi account and that you've completed Key User verification.

An account not properly linked to the vehicle may not display all available functions.

Check Smartphone Compatibility

Digital Key requires a compatible smartphone and supported digital-wallet application.

Not every phone supports the same NFC or wireless Digital Key functions. Check your device's compatibility before trying to set it up.

Check the Vehicle Software

Digital Key also depends on compatible vehicle software.

If your A3 should support the feature but the option doesn't appear, check whether the vehicle requires a software update or another activation step.

How Does NFC Digital Key Work?

NFC uses short-range wireless communication between your smartphone and the vehicle.

Unlike a conventional remote key, an NFC-based Digital Key may require you to place the phone near a designated reader deliberately.

For example, you may need to:

  • Hold the phone against the designated exterior NFC reader to unlock the vehicle.
  • Place the phone in the required interior location before starting the engine.
  • Complete authorization through your digital wallet before using the key.
  • Follow any additional instructions displayed by the vehicle or smartphone.

The exact procedure depends on the hardware, model year and supported phone technology.

Don't assume that simply carrying your phone in your pocket will unlock or start the vehicle. Hands-free operation depends on the wireless technology supported by the specific Digital Key system.

What If Digital Key Sharing Doesn't Work?

If your A3 supports Digital Key but you can't share it with someone else, start by checking whether your vehicle and digital wallet support the sharing function.

Then confirm the following:

  • The primary Digital Key has been successfully activated.
  • The Key User account has completed verification.
  • The recipient has a compatible smartphone and digital wallet.
  • The vehicle and phone have the required software.
  • The sharing function supports the permissions you want to provide.

Remember, adding someone as a Secondary User doesn't automatically authorize their smartphone as a Digital Key.

If the sharing option remains unavailable, confirm the vehicle's supported features before attempting further troubleshooting.

Stay Connected in Your Audi A3

To set up Audi A3 Digital Key NFC sharing authorization, first confirm that your vehicle supports Digital Key. The feature is available on select 2026 and newer Audi models, but it isn't standard equipment on every A3.

If your vehicle supports it, begin by verifying your Key User account in myAudi. Then open Vehicle → All functions → Digital Key and follow the instructions to authorize your smartphone and add the key to a compatible digital wallet.

Digital Key sharing and Secondary User access are separate features. Adding another driver to myAudi doesn't automatically give them permission to unlock or start the vehicle with their phone.

If you can't find the Digital Key or sharing option, check the model year, equipment, account status, smartphone compatibility and software before assuming the NFC system has a problem.
